Edward Deming popularized the idea of the Plan-Do-Check-Act cycle in the 1950s as a way to achieve continuous improvement in quality. It has since been incorporated into all kinds of management systems – including safety management systems. However, many safety professionals find it difficult to keep it going. We’re lucky if we can get through a single element of the cycle before we’re pulled in another direction and on a different safety subject entirely! What if we could find a way to ensure that the PDCA cycle continues to run with only guiding effort from the safety manager? This session will suggest a way to do just that. Along the way, we’ll learn how to effectively engage frontline managers, develop more meaningful safety metrics, hone our risk assessment skills and apply a basic Human and Organizational Performance principle as a bonus!
