The recent and growing interest in building resilient systems and the perpetual desire for safe operations have led to a confusing state of affairs. We often discuss what we think of as separate concepts are in fact different facets of the same phenomenon. Drawing upon interdisciplinary case studies—from aerospace engineering to community disaster management—we will highlight best practices for fostering a culture of safety and resilience that is forward-looking and sustainable.
Attendees will gain insights into integrated safety-resilience frameworks and practical tools for assessing, monitoring, and improving system performance under high levels of complexity and volatility. Ultimately, this lecture aims to demonstrate that embedding safety and resilience at the core of strategic decision-making is key to safeguarding both people and systems, ensuring that they can not only survive but also thrive in an ever-changing world.
